Search Engine Optimization - 5 Ways to Optimize Your Marketing Videos

Video is a great way to promote your local business. When handled properly, video can increase sales and help your website rank higher in search engines. The methods for optimizing a video are similar to the search engine optimization techniques used for other pages of your website.

5 ways to optimize your videos:

1) Make sure there is keyword rich text around the video.

A video in the middle of a blank page isn't going to rank well. Search engines can't watch a video so you will need to provide some text that they can use to properly index and rank the page. Make the text descriptive of the video using relevant keywords.
Also, there are a few people, myself included, who prefer to read what you're presenting rather than watch your video. Unless there is a compelling reason to spend the time watching the video I will almost always scroll down to look for the text version.

Tip: You can edit the video script or transcript to make it stand on its own as an article, and post it below the video.
Tip: Make good use of the "real estate" around your videos on video sharing sites by adding keyword rich text to the page wherever reasonable.

2) Insert keywords in the video's metadata.

This data is attached directly to your video and can be extracted by search engines to better index and rank your content. You will definitely want to create a keyword rich description of the video within the metadata. Keep in mind that this is data that can be viewed by users who download your video.

3) Insert keywords in the video's filename.

4) Insert keywords in the URL for the video page.

Tip: Video sharing sites often use the video's "Title" to create the URL, so use keywords judiciously.

5) Always include the complete URL for your video page in your video's description.

I make it the very first thing in the description. Sometimes the website that you upload it to will turn it into a real link back to your site, sometimes they won't. At the very least, it provides users with everything they need to find your video, or your website.

Local Search Engine Optimization - 5 Tips

These five tried-and-true fundamentals of local search engine optimization can help your local business website rank higher, and ultimately increase traffic and sales.

1. Add or Claim Your Local Listing

First, you will want to add or claim your local business listing in the major search engines: Google Maps, Yahoo! Local, and Bing Local.

Many other sites will automatically find and list information about your business. Usually, this means that your website is left unclaimed, hanging out there in directory limbo.

Don't let this happen to your business. You will miss-out on free exposure, extra traffic, and good incoming links that could only help with your Search Engine Optimization efforts.

As well, these local business listings, or profiles, can help to build trust with the major search engines. If your local business is legitimate, Google and the other major search engines want to rank your site well. They just need reason to trust that it is relevant and useful to their users, and this could be one of the most important ways to earn that trust.

Finally, this prevents someone else from claiming your listing, and allows you to correct any errors or add missing information. Make certain that you add your business in the correct categories.

2. Submit Your Business Information to the Major Data Providers

These companies include, ExpressUpdateUSA.com, Acxiom and Localeze, and they collect the data that is the foundation of local search engine results. Make sure your business information is listed, accurately and consistently over these data providers.

NOTE: Always be sure to add your business in the right categories.

3. Use Geographic-Specific Keywords in Your Title Tags, Heading Tags, and in the Content on Your Website.

Make certain your website is found when local searchers add a geographic modifier (city, town, county, zip code, neighborhood, etc.) to your important keyword phrases. If you are a plumber, for example, use phrases like "plumber ventura" or "plumber ventura county" so that you will rank higher for these types of searches.

When you have control over the link text used to link to your website from another website, be sure to use these types of geo-targeted keyword phrases.

4. Make Sure Your Local Business Information is Accurate and Consistent

This is crucial. This is about trust. Make sure that your business information is both accurate and consistent wherever it is made available on the Internet. Use the exact same business name, address, and phone number whenever possible.

In the local Internet marketing business we call this a citation. A citation consists of your company Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP). Notice that I typed number and not numbers. Use only one phone number as you create your business profiles around the Internet (I advise against the use of multiple tracking numbers unless you know what you're doing.). Google needs to see a consistent NAP, using the same phone number.

Bottom line: Build citations, and build them everywhere, accurately, consistently, and with robust profiles (lots of text, photos, videos, etc.).

5. Don't Reinvent the Wheel

It is likely that your high-ranking competitors have paid their SEO / Internet marketing dues and are ranking well for good reason. Study closely what they are doing to achieve their position, both on their website, and off (inbound links).

NOTE: Do not copy content directly from another website. Create lots of original and engaging content for the pages that you want to rank high in search engines.

Local search engine optimization is both an art and a science. Creating content that appeals to and motivates your visitors is the top priority. But using this great content to create a website that the major search engines deem a trustworthy and important source of information or commerce is golden.

Why You Should Choose a Local Internet Marketing Agency

Would you engage a Realtor in Biloxi, Mississippi to sell your home in Camarillo, California? Probably not. A local Realtor knows the area, knows the people, knows the inventory, etc. It's a similar situation when you want to engage the services of a local Internet marketing agency in Ventura County.

5 good reasons to choose a local Internet marketing agency:

1. A local agency can do business with you face-to-face. Communication is vital to a successful Internet Marketing campaign. Whether it's spending time with you to see and learn about your business, discussing your needs and goals, working directly with you to create promotional photographs and videos, or simply answering questions prior to your signing the Agreement, a local agency is your business partner, and your neighbor.

2. Having worked with many clients in the same area, a local agency has local resources, connections, and networks that national agencies simply to do not have. We can leverage these assets to get you faster, better, longer-lasting results.

3. Word travels fast at the local level, and a local agency is very interested in protecting their reputation. In our experience, the local agency simply tries harder to please their clients. They serve a much smaller number of clients and have much more riding on each of their successes.

4. Many national companies outsource their local work to...guess who? The local agencies! They leverage our skill and resources to help their local business clients. Do yourself a favor and cut out the middle man.

5. Often at national companies your account will not be managed by the real talent on staff, but by junior-level employees, or perhaps interns. We believe that some of the best Internet marketing work in the industry is coming out of small, local agencies, where the experts are hands-on with your campaign.

Whether you choose Skelton or another local agency, our advice to any business wanting more new customers from the Internet is to keep it local, engage an Internet marketing agency located in Ventura County.

Blogging for Local SEO (Local Search Engine Optimization)

Blogs are everywhere. Most websites have them. It would be difficult to use a search engine and not run in to one on the first page of results. Billions of dollars are being made every year using the power of blogs.

So, why aren’t more local businesses using a company blog to help in their local SEO and sales efforts?

It’s likely that they don’t know how to make it work for their businesses, or they doubt their efforts will pay-off so they won’t invest the resources needed to create and maintain it, or perhaps they are working on just getting a website built for their company.

Whatever the reason, most local businesses are not utilizing the power of the blog. This presents a great opportunity for wise local businesses to outperform their competitors.

Key Local SEO Benefits of a Company Blog

1) Fresh Content

Google seems to prefer websites with fresh content, published consistently. Putting in place a program for the frequent publishing of fresh content that is useful and engaging to visitors is paying off for local businesses.

2) Backlinks

These can be links from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc., or links from third-party directories, websites and blogs. As you create and promote your blog posts you will most likely see your number of backlinks increase. The key is to make your blog posts relevant and interesting to your local customers and community. If you don’t already know, links from other quality websites and blogs can help boost your rankings in major search engines, like Google.

3) Engagement

Your blog gives your company a voice online, and it provides your current customers and prospective customers many ways to interact with your company. Search engines are increasingly looking for evidence that your company is interacting online, that there is a “conversation” about your company online, and that people have good things to say about you.

4) Helps You Rank Better for More Keyword Phrases

As you create more focused content on your blog you give Google, and other search engines, more words to use to rank your web pages. For most local businesses there are only a handful of keyword phrases that bring in the bulk of new customers. However, consider the new business that could come in from all the oddball keyword phrases that people search on. Adding more focused content to your site can help you rank for these less competitive and valuable keyword phrases.

Other Benefits of a Local Company Blog

1) It Can Build Credibility

Creating lots of useful and relevant content on your website shows prospective customers that, at the very least, you have given your product or service some thought. Handled properly, a blog can reveal to the world that you are an expert in what you do or in what you sell—this helps you become the “go-to” company. This is especially important for local businesses whose product or service is expensive, when the sales process is complex, or when the sales cycle is long.

2) It’s a Pre-Selling Opportunity

You should already have core pages on your website that exist to handle pre-sale objections and address the questions and concerns of potential customers. Your blog can enhance these efforts. For example, write down the top ten questions your customers are asking you. Then write down the ten questions they should be asking you. Create a blog post for each question with an in-depth and engaging answer. Link to these longer answers from your FAQ or help section, which should be addressing these questions in short-form.

3) A Chance to Be Charming

People want to feel like you see the best in them. They also want to see the best in you, especially when they’re about to put their trust in you and give you their money. Your company blog provides an opportunity for you to showcase the ‘charming’ side of your company. Remember that people buy from people, not companies. Show them that you are real people, real good people, and that you’re friendly, trustworthy, good to your employees, your customers, the community you live in, your industry or peers, etc.

4) Proactive Reputation Management

If your company’s reputation is ever attacked online you will have a platform from which to set the record straight, offer a solution, or even make an apology, when appropriate.

5) It Can Increase Referrals and Repeat Business

By joining or starting a conversation using your blog posts, you help your company to achieve and maintain “top-of-mind” status with your customers and followers. Ideally, whenever the subject of a product or service that you sell comes up these people will immediately think of you, and act accordingly.

6) Give ‘em Something to Talk About

A blog gives you a good reason to speak to the world, and blogs are inherently social. When you create new content you have a chance to get your company noticed by sending word of your latest blog masterpiece to Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, your email list, and on, and on.

7) It’s Easy

Just log in to your blogging software (You are using a CMS for you website, aren’t you?), and use the easy-to-use interface to create your new blog post, preview it, and publish it. By the way, I highly recommend building your local business website using the world’s most popular blogging platform, WordPress (http://wordpress.org/).

Who’s Going to Create All of That Content for Your Blog?

Ideally, someone at your company will write the content for your blog. If that isn’t practical or possible, you can hire a writer to create content for you.

You can find and hire good writers for less money than you might imagine using Upwork.

Whether you use it to keep in touch with your customers, educate and pre-sell prospective customers, for local SEO, or for helping with your social media campaign, a company blog can do amazing things for your local business.

Have questions? Call us: (805) 233-3274
